I'm a guy. I see that most of the guys wear t-shirts under their office(dress) shirts at work. Why do they do it? Is it about sweating? I actually shave my armpits and use deo-antiperspirant. I change my shirt every day and I shower every day. Should I still do it? It looks ugly. Please advise.

Yup most of it is sweating. It went from wearing the basic undershirt under everything no matter what, to wearing a T shirt under dress shirts. Personally, I think it looks ugly when they are visible, such as a white dress shirt with visible undershirts. Otherwise I wear them too. It's just comfortable and if you sweat, it doesn't ruin the shirt or anything. But for you, I guess sweating is not a problem. Whatever floats your boat, its not a big deal : )

No, it's because most Dress shirts are somewhat see-thru and they don't want you to see their chest. You can wear a plain white T-Shirt or Tank top, but anything more would be silly. It's personal preference. I don't usually wear a T-Shirt unless you can really see my body through the shirt, then I might throw a $3 Hanes shirt on. Don't wear any shirt that can be seen through the dress shirt. Usually a plain white T-Shirt will blend in and will just make the shirt look more opaque.

ahhh I use to think the same thing. But here's why (in some cases). If your t-shirt is white (or other colours sometimes) it is kind of see through since it's thin (this can reveal nipples, so if one's hard from the cold, and the others not, then it'll look all weird). So if you wear a shirt underneath, then it solves that problem. But you need to find a loose comfortable shirt to go underneath, and one thats not too thick. On a plus note, after work you just throw off that work shirt and you chill out in your undershirt.

peace and love,
rob

Wearing a T-shirt under a dress shirt provides a cleaner, more professional look. When you dress for work you want to minimize the amount of "Scruffiness" in your appearance.

Dress shirts are usually made of thinner material and depending on the weather, humidity, and body sweat it can become almost see-thru, especially lighter colored shirts. A plain white T-shirt helps hide nipples, arm pit hair, chest hair, and tattoos that would be revealed under these conditions and detract from your professional appearance. The T-Shirt needs to be a plain white shirt with no logos or writing, its just as "unprofessional" looking when these things can be seen through the dress shirt.

A guy that still looks "scruffy" in slacks and a dress shirt comes across as "unprofessional" to clients and coworkers. This can adversly affect job performance, appreances do matter in the work environment, and a professional apearance can set a good impression for clients and coworkers. A scruffy-looking guy in dress clothes can be the best in his field and know more about the job than anyone there, but his clients and coworkers will still tend to be dismissive or condesending because he doesn't come across with a "professional" appearance.

There's a lot more to looking professional than just a T-shirt under your dress shirt. Dress clothes should be ironed/pressed, not wrinkled. If your dress shirt is part of a uniform (EMS, Police, Security, etc.) put in "military creases" if you know how. They'll make an even sharper appearance and help maintain the "professional" look even as the shirt gets wrinkled during the work day. Shoes should be buffed or shined and not scuffed up. Facial, ear and nose hair should be neatly trimmed or shaved. No piercings, "professional" guys don't wear studs/rings in the nose, tongue, eyebrows, or ears. Fingernails should be trimmed and clean. Also, no tattoos, try to cover them as best as you can. These apply especially to office type settings or customer service settings where it is important to make a good impression not just for yourself, but for the company as a whole. A company's employees are the "face of the company" viewed by clients/customers, and it can cripple business if they think the employees are "unprofessional bums."

I think most men wear an undershirt because of sweating. Even if you wash your clothes and your body your sweat can stain the clothes and it's better to stain a cheap undershirt than your nice work shirt. Sometimes guys wear an undershirt if the dress shirt is itchy too. Also, some men don't like to tuck in their dress shirt so they wear the undershirt to tuck in and the nice shirt to leave out. If you don't want to wear one you don't have to. It's not a law as far as I know and I have never heard of anyone being sent to jail for it.

Most men I know do it because it keeps their nipples from showing, and creates a smooth line from their neck to their belt.

I happen to think it's sexy when men take the time to dress well like that - and I don't think a t-shirt under a dress shirt is ugly what so ever...

you should wear a shirt that is undetectable. a tank top will work as well. sometimes dress shirts are a bit see-through and people can see your nipples or chest hair, whatever. so, yes, I think you should wear a nice undershirt.

Many shirts show nipples and the color of your skin thru them, and that doesn't look professional, and also if your back should ever sweat on a rough day, the shirt would stick to you and be all wet. Why are you shaving your underarms?
