If you are using a scientific calculator, there is a button which has the mark "a/b" or something similar to that. Just press that button and it will display the equivalent fraction of the decimal you have entered.
Just visit this link for help on using TI-83 calculator http://www.prenhall.com/esm/app/calc_v2/frameset_83.html

When having a decimal in a calculater, for example .343 you multiply this number by 10 which equals 3.430 and then you put it over a 100 (on paper) but it's an improper fraction so you divide 430 by 100 which equals to 4 and 30 remainding, then you add the whole numbers (3+4) and you get 7 and then you put your 30 over a 100 So it would be 7 and 30 over a 100 but you have to simplify so instead of 30 over a hundred you will reduce it to 3 over 10 So the final answer would be 7 and 3 10s.

17 is a prime number so it will not simplify. The only way to do it, is by long division, which you say you are not supposed to use??!! sorry. I dont know any other way than 40 into 17 = 0 40 into 170 = 4 remainder 10 40 into 100 = 2 remainder 20 40 into 200 = 5 no remainder = 0.425

your decimal is just the number you have (let's say it's .85) over the value of the last digit (hundredths) so its 85/100- just simplify. or use the fraction button to help you- it's the one that has Ab/c on it...
