Lenin, in his will, said: "I do not recommend comrade Stalin as Secretary of the Party. This comrade has accumulated in his hands a tremendous power, and I am not sure that he will use this power with the necessary caution."

Lenin and Trotsky were the brains, Stalin was the brute. Lenin fell ill and Stalin relayed information between Lenin and the troops. Needless to say, the intel was a bit skewed.

By the time Lenin died, everyone had become used to Stalin giving the orders. The only remaining threat to Stalin, Trotsky, escaped to Mexico but was later killed by Stalin's henchmen.
