Its restriction of your respiration is only secondary. Its true intent is to restrict the blood supply to the brain. It puts pressure on the neck in such a way as to pinch off the carotid artery, therefore causing you to black out from lack of oxygen to the brain.

when the sleeper hold to put on someone it obstructs their windpipe therefore cutting the air to the brain which in turn causes the person to pass out.

It doesn't cut off the air supply. The offensive wrestler's arm is used to cut off the blood supply to the brain by pressing on the carotid artery.

You deprive the brain of oxygen so it blacks out...does not mean you die....its actually not that deadly...what is deadly is when you crush the larynx and they can no longer breathe.....just like in UFC...you see guys pass out while fighting from sleeper holds....
