Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is often quoted as saying "Israel should be wiped off the map", a phrase often taken to mean genocide. And yet many people seem to ignore the full quote: "Israel should be wiped off the map like the USSR was."

Did the USSR have a genocide against them that I wasn't aware of, or is Ahmadinejad actually not talking about murdering six million Jews?

Well exactly...It's not like he wants to kill the people living in Israel...He thinks Israel as a country ,should not exist anymore...He is against a country who ,by its existence, denies the existence of millions of people...And of course he has some political gains if Israel wouldn't exist in the Middle East...
Of course everyone seems to ignore the full quote, they get only the part that serves them...And that part makes Ahmadinejad look like an evil man...who would do anything to destroy "poor little innocent" Israel...which of course makes Israel look like the victim,again...

I don't believe Ahmadinejad is talking about murdering 6 million Jews. He is talking about the STATE of Israel, not the people of Israel.

No one can say anything about the state of Israel without being accused of being anti-Semitic, and this undeserved sympathy is the crux of what Ahmadinejad is talking about. He feels that the Jewish people have 'played up' the Holocaust, thereby resulting in the formation of Israel and the displacing of the Palestinians. He is defending the Palestinian's right to have their own land back. He is not talking about wiping the Jewish people off the map.

Ahmadinejad's words are being deliberately misconstrued in order to create a reason to get rid of him.

As someone else pointed out, Ahmadinejad has made it abundantly clear by numerous other statements as to what his ideology and goals are. That being the case, I do not think you can subject that quote to your "revisionism" and have it fly.

But as has been pointed out, let us assume you are correct. If that is the case, then the USSR was merely a Communist political system that was replaced BY ITS OWN PEOPLE with a democratic (well, sort of) system. Are you trying to suggest that Ahmadinejad was suggesting that the Israelis replace their own Jewish state with a different political entity? Obviously not. And it is obviious that the Israelis would never do such a thing. That being the case, how would Ahmadinejad, in his opinion, achieve this goal of "wiping Israel off the map"? Well, the answer to that one is obvious as well. War!
So, in other words, Ahmadinejad has made an existential threat against another soveriegn nation and if he made good on that threat, what do you think would happen if things went bad for Israel?
So, please spare us from your "analysis". You're not very good at it.

It was the genocide of a name, instead of a people. 6 million times, USSR was written, and now Russia. I think it started with the 1980 USA victory over USSR in ice hockey. We stole two letters then. Who took the other 2?

Don't be misled. Based on the videos of him shown on Memri.TV, I believe he means all the Jews in Israel. What does it matter if he meant buildings or people? Semantics. He means to kill the Jews. Isn't that enough reason to deal with the man in the harshest manner possible? Genocide is pretty serious as I recall.

properly the guideline of thumb is "Catholics say Derry and Protestants say Londonderry" yet no longer plenty those days, i be attentive to lots of Protestants who call it Derry - that's 2 syllables shorter so why no longer. i've got faith warning signs replace between the two, the council makes use of the two Derry and Londonderry on that's literature, or maybe newsreaders replace between the two names with the intention to no longer coach bias, yet actual as that's your homeland you're sure to be attentive to this, so somewhat uncertain as to the part of your question.

I agree. I don't think that Ahmadinejad was referring to a genocide. I took his comments to mean that he just feels that there should not be a 'Jewish' state on lands that once belonged to Palestinians.

His comment is confusing...the USSR wasn't wiped off the map.

It was dissolved and individual countries were formed. Other than, like you said, genocide, I don't see a point to his statement.

Since you're so astute and interested in the WHOLE STORY , remember this :
Achmadinejad has also denied the Holocaust
He also has referred to Jews as 'infidels' and in his book, 'infidel' is an expendable dog or cow along side the road . To which he believes that Allah encourages the random killing of said infidel !!
And I couldn't believe this one, but I saw it on many reliable sites . . .He said that all non-believers of his way of thinking should be 'branded on their foreheads' .

So, considering the WHOLE STORY, I'd say he's planning GENOCIDE and 'magically trying to explain away the Holocaust' in preparation of said GENOCIDE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
