Muhammad was born in 570 in mecca. He was an orphan and was raised by his uncle. In 610, when muhammad was praying to the 360 Gods (who used to be pictured in the Kabah which is a religious shrine of Islam) he heard a voice tell him there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet. Muhammad went and told all his people about his vision and especially told his father-in-law Abu Bakr. The people of Mecca felt that this new religion about there only being one God would deprive the Kabah. A town called Yathrib had invited Muhammad and his followers to their town in 622. This was called Hijrah. Muslims regard this as the birth of Islam and so they refer this to their Year 1. Muhammad changes the name Yathrib to Medina (city of the Prophet). With all these changes in religion, Mecca and Medina begin to battle. The first battle, Medina won and they believed it was because Allah was on their side. The second battle, Mecca won and Medina felt that this was Allah's test (Jihad). Then the third battle, Medina won it all. The religion rapidly spread and Muhammad achieved success. He died in 622. Muhammad named Abu Bakr caliph (deputy of the prophet) and his name was changed to Umar. A year later, Umar wrote the Quran.
