a 55 gallon tank will hold 1 oscar because they can reach a size of up to 15 inches but most about 13

You can have three small oscars, but when they are 6" you either hav to get a tank more than 80g, or trade 2 of them, and when it reaches to its max size it gets really cramped. Boy oscars are very greedy eaters, at a certain time they'll require about 6-10 feeders a week,I dont deny that oscars are a perfect show fish withall kinds of traits that are not found in other fishes, but there are many good cichlid choices for your tank. If this is ur first experience with cichlids try out convicts( http://www.fish-tropical.net/oscar/images/convict_cichlid.jpg ) or severums(http://www.alloddballaquatics.com/misc/GoldSeverum.jpg), or even malawi cichlids, they require less maintenance less space and are even hardy. Otherwise you can check out this link for details about other cichlids

70 gallons PER oscar. No feeding them feeder fish either. Feeding feeder fish is one cause of hole in the head disease and parasites. They need a varied diet.
You need alot of filtration and atleast weekly 40 percent partial waterchanges where you vacume the gravel with a siphon to keep the nitrates down. They need a heater because they are tropical fish. 3-5 watts per gallon so for a 55, 200 watt heater should do it. Oscars are known for breaking heaters so you should make a pvc tube with holes drilled in it to cover the heater.

One, and even that will get cramped for him. As said in another answer, be careful about your heater, Oscars are big brutes, they move anything around the tank they can.

i have a heated out door pond with oscars and other ciclids. Oscars are VERY agressive. he once attacked me and jumped out of the pond as i was walking by.
In a 55 gal, three would be absolutely max. The are not only aggressive, they are teritorial. i would do 2 and a pleco to keep things clean. for some reason they dont mess with the plecos.

also, oscars have very sharp fins which can actually cut your pretty good. i found this out the hard way putting my oscar back in the pond. he has gotten alot better now. i feed him by hand.

I had a 55 gal tank and I had 3 oscars in it ( they were small when i got them, but 2 of them got really big) You need to be careful what you put in with them, because they will eat just about anything. ( I used to give mine feeder guppies every couple of weeks) Mine didn't bother my angel fish or the plecomatous very much... and i had one killer goldfish that was rather large and lasted a couple yrs in with them LOL.

the rule of thumb I've been told is 1" of fish for each gallon of tank. So, considering how big Oscars get, two, maybe three tops. Four would be pushing it.

I've also included a link to a website about oscar care.

Best of luck!
