There are micro organisms in the water which will cause you to get sick. It usually will take like three days before you get sick because the micro organisms have to multiply in your body enough to get you sick. If you boil the water first then it would be fine but that can be a pain so just use bottled water. You could also get other diseases such as hepatitis from the water because it isn't treated under the same strict code as in the United States.

It's not necessarily bad to drink tap water in Mexico. Some places have fine water, but other places that are not as well maintained like peoples water tanks and tap water in poor places have bacteria that most Americans' immune systems aren't adapted to fighting off. Since people in the U.S. drink mostly bottled water, filtered water and mineral water, their immune systems don't develop defenses against the bacteria in water from Mexico and so they get sick if they drink a lot of it at once. Boil it and you'll be fine.

Actually, the water supplied by the municipal services is free of any contaminants. However, most houses and buildings have holding tanks which are not well maintained by their owners and sometimes the water gets contaminated there.
There is also the problem of different microorganisms in Mexico that do not exist normally in the USA.
Remember that 103 million Mexicans drink the water without any problem.
However, if you are still concerned, drink bottled water. It is always safer.

They call it Montezuma's Revenge
When Montezuma and his people were conquered by the Spanish, and eventually killed off, the myth goes that it's a curse left by Montezuma for all of the European people for what they did to his home and his life
If you do believe in legends and curses, this is a fine tale to believe in. But what really causes disease from digestion of the tap water is a little thing called Traveler's Diarrhea, a small strain of bacteria, specifically Bacterial enteropathogens, that is in the way. The native people of Mexico are immune to this because they've had it their whole lives, and have grown used to it.

Their water has bacteria in it that we are not used to. If someone from Mexico come to the US and drank our water, they would most likely not feel well, either. I have actually brushed my teeth with their water, and have sipped their water. I would not recommend drinking the water, but I was in a rather large city, and I took a chance. Nothing happened.
I travel to Mexico a couple of times a year, and I still stick to bottled water. Actually, anywhere in the Caribbean, I still stick to bottled water.

that is real and for this reason: In Mexico, there is diverse bacteria of their water, which we are no longer familiar with. in case you drink the water, your digestive gadget really panics and does each and everything it may to get the overseas bacteria out. I worked at a club Med as a nurse there and pronounced a large number of vacationers vacation trips truly ruined because they accidently drank the water at the same time as they'd ice of their drinks (ice, of direction, remains water and it doesn't kill the bacteria) So if you're planning a visit to Mexico, be very careful no longer to get their water into you or your holiday may be ruined. instead, you may purchase bottled water there, like Evian, or be like me and merely drink canned Coke the entire time. It doesn't do a lot on your enamel, in spite of the undeniable fact that it beats being sicker than unwell. If push got here to shove and also you necessary to drink Mexican water, you should adequately upload some drops of bleach to the water to kill the icky bacteria or boil the water for ten minutes. no longer too reachable to attempt this in spite of the undeniable fact that. the protection stress makes use of iodine pills to decontaminate the water (even in spite of the undeniable fact that I recognize it tastes undesirable) to kill amoebas (amoeba, amoeba, amoeba! Arriba!) i desire this helps answer your question and would you not in any respect adventure the undesirable consequences of Mexican water!

It all depends on where in Mexico...Cancun...for example has their own water plant....clean, good water....for the tourist areas....downtown Cancun may be different. If you don't trust the water...don't trust the ice either.....even in your drinks!

You can pick up hepatitis - even from an iceblock. Most mainsteam tourist hotels have water that is quite safe but otherwise buy it bottled.
