Santa is as real or unreal as you choose to him to be. The spirit of Santa is spreading joy to others during the Christmas season. If you believe in spreading the Christmas spirit, then you act in the "santa clause" mode. I have always been honest that I put the presents from Santa under the tree he asked for, but that I was fortunate enough to be able to buy them for him. He knows the meaning of Christmas, and the history of Santa.

Is Santa real? Of course Santa is real. He is the hope that we all have each Christmas. He's the spirit that helps to bring some "peace on earth, goodwill towards men". Without Santa, life would be sad, there wouldn't be the gift giving that we have or the holiday spirit that we enjoy. Don't let anyone tell you differently, sweetie.
