It possibly sounds like your thermostat is broken, but take it to your mechanic anyways

check you have enough coolant in your radiator. it shouldn't be more than 2" below the top when cold, or 1" when hot.

it's like this. your cooling system is filled with liquid like water and/or coolant. and like every plumber knows, water goes downhill. so if the coolant is low in your radiator, it's a good bet it's low inside the rest of the cooling system as well, and you might not have coolant reaching the temp sensor. that's causing that part of the engine to heat up really fast. the engine won't boil over cuz you stil have loads of fluid in there dissipating the heat. it's just getting really hot in the top where the temp sensor and thermostat are because the fluid is low.

so make sure the overflow tank is about half full of coolant, and your radiator coolant is at the right level.

if your coolant checks out, then you're going to have to check the temperature sensor.

if the temp sensor is bad, change your thermostat and the gasket as well because its right next to the sensor and is probably fried and stuck open by now. tell me does the heater work and put out good heat or does it take forever and a day?

thermostats are cheap and you're gonna take the bellhousing off anyway to get to the temp sensor.

thermostat 4-5$
gasket 50 cents
temp sensor 20$
gallon of premixed water/coolant 10$

There could be 1 of a few problems.the coolant level might be too low, faulty temp sensor,or it could be the ground wire to your sensor. If a gauge wont move its the power wire and if its at max the ground is faulty.
