Iran demanded Tuesday that the U.N. Security Council condemn what it said was Israel's clandestine development of nuclear weapons and "compel" it to place all its nuclear facilities under U.N. inspection.

If Israel refuses to comply, Iran said the council must take "resolute action" under Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter which authorizes a range of measures from diplomatic and economic sanctions to military action.

You know, I don't normally agree with Tehran, but they do have a point. How can Israel 'flaunt' their nuclear program without UN inspections or UN Security Council sanctions when the same Security Council is threatening sanctions on Iran?

I'm not pro-Iran or pro-Israel, but those that say that Israel hasn't called upon the destruction of another country haven't been paying attention to what has been going on with Gaza and Israel's other neighbors.

While Israel has not openly admitted to having nuclear weapons, "But in the German TV interview broadcast Dec. 12, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert listed Israel among countries that possess nuclear weapons.

Olmert's comments — which his office said were misinterpreted — came days after Robert Gates, who took over Monday as U.S. defense secretary, said in testimony to a Senate committee that Israel was a member of the club of nuclear-armed nations."

Israel's nuclear weapons are not all that clandestine. They began building a nuclear reactor right after WWII near Dimona in the Negev Desert; they originally teamed up with France to build and supply the reactor, but in the mid-50's, France opted out.
They were worried about their reputation in the world should it be found out that they were involved. By the 1960's, the nuclear reactor in Israel was in full swing. Israel refused to become part of the NNPT (nuclear non-proliferation treaty).

Those in the Western world are blissfully unaware of Israel's nuclear capabilites, in large part due to the media's incompetance. But, make no mistake, those in the Middle East are fully aware. The hypocrisy of the US, by cozying up to the only country in the Middle East with the capability to nuke its neighbours, while claiming the need to punish those with WMD, is disgusting. It certainly explains the hatred toward Americans in that part of the world.

Israel has disregarded all the resolutions of the UN to this point, it is unlikely they will start now.

To Yupchagee: Read this again. Israel has the CAPABILITY of nuking people. They are not stupid, do you think they would set off a bomb so close to their own country? It is the fact that Israel has nuclear weapons that is the issue here.

Because the UN and the 7 controling members have deemed Israel a non-threat and was okayed for nuclear production including the US and several others years ago. Iran was not deemed "safe" including most of the middle east. Certain countries, especially those who are currently funding terrorism should not be able to create nuclear weapons, but Israel has been defending its country from attacks and has still not used their nuclear weapons because they are responsible with them. They know when they should or should not use them, and Iran does not. Just a political ploy to bog down ignorant minds and the media.

Iran has broken the U.N. Security councils resolutions and therefore should have no rights under international law to even voice an opinion.

It is like a drug dealer being caught smuggling at the border, they are charged, now are they entitled to report their neighbour who is also involved in illegal activity. Yes they are. But , are they considered a reliable source? No they are not.

Iran can complain and try to deflect the deserving consequences of it's decietful actions, but they will still be brought to task.

[i think the ahmadijihad needs to be deported to a north korean work concentration camp, l understand they are offering a job in the mines, and room and board is free}

Israel will probably be excused since the source is a violent threatening little tyrant.

Whereas Israelis are decent honest and honorable countrymen who have gone through utter hell living next to the Muhammad followers that have been commanded to violently hate with a sinister intent.

I'm not fans of the guys either but.. I really don't trust Israel any more than I trust them, either.

If the Security Council doesn't go after Israel, assuming Iran's accusations are founded in reality, it doesn't really leave any justification to be going after Iran or North Korea on the same issue. Well, other than, 'we just don't like them'.

For most Americans, I think 'we just don't like them' is good enough, but picking and choosing where and when to apply rules is the act of an Autocracy and reminicent of George Orwell's 1984.

Israel? A friend of the US? If they're so friendly, why do they have the third largest political lobby in America? They're so nice to us they have to convince our officials to pass Pro-Israeli legislation? You'd think if they were such good friends, they wouldn't need to lobby at all.

Well, the difference Israel has never called for the destruction of a country such as Iran has. Muslim country's have said that Israel shall be no more and will be wiped off the map etc. Israel does not such thing. Neither does the US. I am not Jewish or Israeli but a German American.

They've been planning this action for a long time . Another ATTEMPT to 'magically fool all those who would listen', by the Anti-Christ Achmadinejad !!!!

Big difference between 'responsible and peaceful' nations and 'renegade and threatening' empires like Iran !!!

You don't allow anybody to have nuclear weapons, when they already express the desire to wipe entire countries off the map !!!

Can you sight a source for Israel "flaunting" their nuclear program" ? As far as I can remember they have always maintained that they do not have a nuclear weapons program. Although no one really believes this I cannot remember an Israeli admitting to nuclear arms.

Good point.

Israel has violated the Geneva convention a number of times (e.g. the geneva con prohibits moving your own people into occupied territory), but who in the west is protesting? It's the duty of all countries that sign the convention to stop countries that violate it. If the world smashes the Islamic Republic, they can't turn the blind eye to a nation doing worse things.

What is good for the goose must be good for the gander.

Why the hell should Israel flaunt UN resolutions but the US expect IRAN, a sovereign Nation, to abide by them?

Actually I forgot, Israel is a friend of the US.. sorry!!!!!

You know what.? I agree in principle here. There is one small problem concerning the area available to keep them hidden, with Israel at a great disadvantage.

We also all know this is not going to happen - opening Israel up to inspections.
