Using Yahoo or MSN messenger should carry no "per message" charges for sending (or receiving) Instant Messages if you are on even a basic Sprint "Vision" plan.

IM's are not the same as SMS text messages, which must either be purchased as a plan feature, or paid for at a rate of 15 cents per message, incoming OR outgoing.

I'm not sure Yahoo isn't charging for the mobile version of their messenger program nowadays, though.
