Maus is extremely important in terms of showing that graphic novels can show serious and important themes. For making another generation aware of the horrors of Nazism and helping to prevent them from happening again, Maus is deserving of all the awards it has won.

If you liked Maus, also check out Will Eisner’s A Contract with God. Toonopedia also has an excellent article on Maus.

As far as comparing Maus to books that have been banned, I think we are beyond banning most books now, except for those that are shown to be outright lies, to prevent the spread of lies. Many books were banned in the past because either people wanted to keep people ignorant so the things portrayed in the banned books would not change. In other cases, people thought that the writers wanted to bring back things that had been changed, and so banned the books in what they thought was a preventative measure.

However, it is well know that “We must never forget” so that Nazism will never be brought back. The theme of Maus is just as important today.

Look at Ahmedinejad of Iran. Here we have a world leader who is saying, “There wasn’t a Holocaust, but there OUGHT to be one, and I’m just the guy to do it!” If that isn’t enough to scare the pants off anybody who knows the history of the Nazis in Europe, I don’t know what is. We should all be doing whatever we can to ensure that Ahmedinejad cannot carry out his evil. Warn everybody.

I loved it. It's been years since I read it, but I think the second book is mostly about the father's time in the prison camp and how he survived

Was it banned? I wasn't aware of that. From where?
