it would mean the apple grew to close to the trunk and rolled away from the tree. or it could mean the wind blew the branch closer to the tree.
technically the tree would have to grow sideways
but thats almost impossible
if an apple or any fruit fell from the tree it implies disconnection from the Roots and branches. meaning not connected to God.
But analogies from tree parables is hard to discern and is usually only according to the ONE who made it up.

It is physically possible for an apple to fall from the tree and hit the base of the tree sideways. Let's say an apple tree is growing on a slope that is slowly eroding. The tree keeps trying to grow upwards, and trees mostly grow from the ends, and not from the middle. So, the tree grows upward, but because of the changing slope, the root-base ends up on its side. So the tree arcs up:
from: |
to this: \
to this: L
If the tree has this 'L' shape, an apple falling from the top of the tree might hit the base of the tree at a right angle, appearing sideways from the perspective of the base.
I'm not sure what the mythological consequences of this action would be.
It could also mean that the tree has simply fallen over, and now some of the remaining apples are falling off, hitting the trunk sideways... because the tree is sideways.

For an apple to fall of a tree means to follow the laws of gravity, which states that objects are pulled toward the center of the force being excerted along the path of least resistance, which means straight down.
For it to be interrupted in it's downward flight, another force MUST interfere with the gravitational force being exerted downward strong enough so that the path of the apple's flight is redirected toward's the tree.
The example of a person hitting a baseball with a bat is perfect. The trajectory of the baseball thrown towards the batter is pulled towards the ground in an ever decscending arc (unless the ball is thrown upwards, in which case it will reach an apex (or the catcher's mitt) before beginning it's descent). However, the force the bat exerts against the ball is greater than the force gravity exerts downward, hence the ball's redirection in flight away from the player, at which point gravity immediately begins pulling the ball downward, which causes the ball to lose height as it travels, preferably into some outfielder's glove.
Technically, any interference with a natural process must be explained by the presence of another 'force' acting against it. Although supernatural, the 'devil's hand' could be used to explain it, if one believes in the devil that is.
Hope that answers your question.

It simply means the tree fell over. Nothing more.
