Could be a bad cable, make sure it's the correct type (regular CAT5) and not a crossover cable. Do you see a link light on your laptop's network port? Does this same cable modem work when connected to a different machine? Is the connection straight to your laptop, or do you have a router?

What does your laptop say about the local area connection?

How your laptop connect to the cable modem? cat5 cable or USB? If USB then you need to install a driver from the modem manufacturer. For cat 5 cable, you need to check if the ethernet controller is enable and works properly (Using system device manager) then run IP configuration utility to renew the IP address for your laptop

In addition to the above, make sure that the local area connection is ENABLED on your laptop. If your laptop is mostly used for a WIRELESS connection, you may have disabled the hard-wired or local area connection.
