If you are not at home when the postal carrier tries to deliver your package, they will leave a slip in your mail box telling you they tried to deliver a package. You have a couple of options, they are listed on the slip that was left in place of the package. 1) you can sign the slip in the proper place put it back in the mail box , in this box it will ask you which day you will be home, they will attempt delivery the day you request, they will not deliver it the next day because you have the slip, so they wait to see if you want it re-delivered, or 2) You can just keep the slip, and go to the postal center and pick up your package, wait until the day after you recieve the slip to go , The address is located on the back, directing you to the post office that is holding your package, the office hours and phone number is also printed near the address. 3) The slip will tell you how long they will hold your package before returning it to the sender, usually 5-7 days.

If they are home, they will have to sign for the package. If they are not home, the postal carrier will leave a notice with instructions.

The recipient will have the option of picking it up at the post office or having it re-delivered. They leave the instructions on their mailbox for the carrier.

If, after the third attempt, the package is undeliverable, it will be returned to the sender.

It depends on the carrier but the delivery person may try to leave it with a neighbor. If that is the case a note will be left on the door of the addressee telling them where the package is. If the carrier does not leave it they will get a notice and usually a time of a next attempted delivery will be indicated. Usually after 3 attempts the package will go back to the distribution site and the addressee will have to go pick it up. Usually if it is not picked up in a week, it will be returned to the sender. I believe, however, the US Mail service will only make one attempt at delivery before the addressee has to pick it up at the post office

To answer your question: The person will recieve a notice from the carrier that there is a parcel for them. They are given a period of time to pick up the item or make arrangements for the pick-up. Most people do get their parcels. The parcel being signed is a security measure. This is registered mail. If no one picks up a parcel yes it is returned to the sender. It will indicate the number of times the information for the parcel was sent to the address.

Well each shipping company is a little different but the majority require a person to be home to sign for the parcel. If no one is at home a notice is left with instrustions on how and when the package can be picked up.
