When people customize shoes do they use fabric and how is it attached to the shoe?

I was wondering when shoes are customized with character print, is what is the print is on indeed fabric and if so how is this attached to the shoe. Do they cut out the pieces they need and sew it on or glue it, becasue i don't want to invest in a product that's been poorly attached and is easily going to come off the shoe. And if so, wouldn't the sewed on ones be better to invest in becasue statistcally they would last longer since they would be of better quality.

It can be any material..cloth, vinyl, plastic or rubber.
