commence means "the start of" i.e. the meeting will commence in 10 minutes.

Its a legal term meaning started as in the early stages of starting, I started my car, means I turned the key and the engine started, ( takes 30 secs). I commenced my Car means I selected the area of land I was to plant the tree on which would provide the wood to produce the charcoal to produce the steel with which to make my car (takes 50 years). Start means in real time, Commence the same thing but with extended timescales.
