It depends. Some gas logs are designed to burn vent-less and some are not. You need to find the operation manual for yours to determine its capabilities. A vent-less gas log can be installed in a fireplace with a damper and outside vent. In that case it is more efficient to operate it with the damper closed. In any case if you do not know for sure OPEN THE DAMPER when operating the fireplace.

it sounds like you have gas logs installed in a conventional fireplace. a gas fireplace is generally a sealed unit. with gas logs, the damper must be open, although not necessarily all the way. gas logs, just like a conventional wood burning fireplace are not designed to be a heat source. they may produce some radiant heat but, most of the heat generated goes up the flue. as for the doors being opened or closed, you will not get any radiant heat with the doors closed. some gas logs require the doors be open for proper operation.

ALWAYS open the damper when using the fireplace. In winter, close the damper when not using it as cold air will come down through the chimney.
