Ideally your adsl router should be connected to the primary telephone socket in your home for the best results. A wireless router (just one) will allow you have your computers anywhere in your home assuming that the computers are wireless enabled. If they are not you can buy adaptors or cards to convert them to wireless. Although you have not made it clear I think you are saying you have a wired computer downstairs and a wireless laptop (not all laptops are wireless surprisingly enough). Simply replace your router with a wireless one. Connect the desktop via the Ethernet cable giving you the same setup as now and the wireless signal can be picked up anywhere in the house by the laptop.

Start with one. It should work but if for some reason it doesn't get another one. Put it in a central location and it should work throughout the house.
