Yesterday I went to the doctors and had a pelvic exam for the first time because my period hasn't started in about 8 months, so they had to check if something was wrong with me. My mom and my friend had told me it wouldn't be painful, but it hurt really bad for me. Is this normal to experience pain? I have to go back to have an altrasound now to make sure I don't have cancer or anything wrong with me..will this hurt too? Could the pain be because I am a virgin?

First of all, don't be frightened. Yes, it is normal to feel some discomfort during a pelvic exam. It was possibly more painful for you because you are a virgin. Ultrasounds typically cause no discomfort. If it is done on the outside of your pelvis they just put a warm gel on your lower tummy and slide a wand around on your skin. This doesn't hurt at all. If it is the kind that is inserted into your vagina, they put gel on it and slip it in like a tampon. It doesn't go in far enough to hurt you but it is a little uncomfortable. Good luck to you, I think you'll be just fine. :-)

The doctor that I went to before my daughter was born and for 2 or 3 years afterward always felt uncomfortable. My doctor (a man) finally retired and I had to find another gyno to go to. I have not been uncomfortable since. I would suggest that you tell the doctor that he or she hurt you and you were very uncomfortable. They may take it a little easier on you. Being a virgin, they should also use a smaller speculum and not a regular size one that they would use on a woman that has had a child or is having regular sex. You may need to find another doctor if the pain continues. My current doctor is a man and is very gentle and about the only thing I feel is a bit of pressure. He has told me that no pelvic exam should cause you pain.

it happens, could be because you are a virgin, were too tense or just lack of lubricant. most likely you tensed up and that makes the exam difficult. most doctors and nurses tell you the exam isn't painful and it really isn't but that's an objective term, as i find many patients have their own ideas of what pain really is. ultrasounds don't typically hurt but there will be a lot of pressure....this is normal. if the pelvic exam hurt you, you may find the ultrasound uncomfortable as well. try leaving your mother home and going alone and let the technician do her job.

ultra sounds don't hurt...they put jelly stuff on your tummy then use this thingy and slide it across your belly. it's painless. the pain may have been from what may be wrong, but just because your a virgin it wouldn't hurt super bad. some of it could be because you were all tense when they did your exam. as long as you try to stay as relaxed as possible pelvic exams are uncomfortable at most, but not like super painful. my first one was painful because i got scared and moved at the same time they started.....so just relax, everything will be ok, and no don't be scared of the ultra sound. good luck!

It is never comfortable. My first time it hurt. It always hurt alittle. Even after I lost my virginity it still hurt alittle and now, It hurts like no other, since I had my son in August. The ultrasound shouldnt hurt. Unless its done vaginally. That scope they use can sometimes be very big. It just depends on the clinic or hospital your at. Tell your Dr. it hurts. I told my Dr. and she prescibed me something for the pain so I could take it before my visits. Good Luck! :)

I have pain with every pelvic exam and I've had four children but everyone is different. It could have been from virginity also I know nerves play into it alot also, it makes your muscles tense up which makes it worse.

It definitly could have been painful because you are a virgin. If you are not used to anything being up there, then yes it could cause pain, so I wouldn't worry. Ultrasounds do not/should not hurt. If it is a vaginal ultrasound, they only put the dopler thingy a little up your vagina, it isn't far at all, so it should not hurt. Goodluck :)

yes, it was probably painful because you are a virgin. I hate to say it but the ultrasound is going to be very awkward to say the least. I had one and they stick this long wand inside you and move it around. I was very uncomfortable with this. they should have used lube, and that should make it better, but it might still be a bit painful. sorry you have to go through that.

since your body isn't used to it yet, yes it can be painful. your muscles are still tight and they don't like being probed at!! so next time you have to go in try taking a muscle relaxer or even asprin or ibproffen to help with the pain. GOOD LUCK!!
