C++ is evergreen. But learn it with some domain knowledge, either VC++ or linux.

Java is cool but lots of competition.

yes, English is a must.

I will suggest you not to bother about software industry.As a mechanical engineer you have better prospect.Try taking a job in NTPC,BHEL or POWERGRID which are very respectable and challenging jobs.
