get both! I know that sounds crazy, but get a kitten and a puppy they might not get along right away but they will grow up together and love eachother. and you can get a small dog. there good for apartments. =] I know how you feel tough I love both too.

As someone who lives in an apartment and who volunteers at the Humane Society...I say go with a cat. A LOT of dogs get surrendered to the shelter because people in apartments 'thought' they could handle the responsibilities a dog requires.
Yes, you have a park...but are you prepared to take the dog there several times a day? What about when you're in a hurry? What if your dog barks and neighbors complain? What if it destroys the apartment via urinating and defecating on the carpets/floor?
The fact of the matter is that dogs, being pack animals, require constant companionship and unless you're prepared to have something relying on you -that- closely (think of a 2 year old who clings to his mothers' leg and that's the equivalent to owning a dog), I would get a cat.
Granted, cats require work as well, but not nearly as much as a dog. Unfortunately, very few people can handle owning a dog in an apartment and it's such a shame to even -try- these days because those dogs that don't work out end up at the shelter.
Either way, good luck

One must ask..do the windows open on this floor, is there a fire escape? do the screens fit tightly? Cats are notorious for "jumping" and a ill-fitting screen or an open window could be a hazard. A small dog could be the best answer if you don't mind all the exercise he or she will need. Do keep in mind that a cat is self sufficient while a dog requires more attention (A DOG THINKS HE SHOULD BE TREATED LIKE A GOD......CATS BELIEVE THEY ARE GODS)

If you have time to go down 9 floors get you a dog. But a cat I feel would be better but it's up to your activity level and how much you wanna be out side with any kind of weather unless your dog will be train to use a potty pad.

Trust me that if your elevator goes out you will not want to walk down and then up twice a day to walk a dog!! I love dogs, but have five acres for them to run all over. A cat will still keep you company and only asks that you keep the litter box clean.

I would advise a cat, because of the litter box issue. If a dog has to wait 9 floors, to get to the bathroom, there could be problems...

well, a cat could jump out of a window, and although many think they can land on all fours, they would DEFINITELY get hurt if falling out of a 9th floor window. Dogs may bark, and make a bigger mess than cats, but I would personally recommend a small dog.

depends on your lifestyle. what you prefer, and how much work you are willing to put into your pet...and dont forget snow and rainy days too..and when you have a puppy its not going t make it down all 9 of those stories to go pee every couple hours 24/7 until he.she is old enough to hold it. the puppy would be alot of work.(even though i prefer dogs to cats myself)
just weigh your options and see what you think. none of us can tell you which would be the best pet for you.

Be mindful that when it is time to take a dog outside you need to have a dog that can wait while you get ready to take it outside, take the elevator down then walk to the park, assuming that you are putting the dog's collar and leash on in the elevator.

If I lived on the 9th floor I would get a dog small enough for piddle pads.
I lived for awhile in apartment on the first floor and it was a big pain in the **** to have to walk Dottie every time she needed to go to the bathroom. Now I just walk her to the backdoor......

Definitely a cat. They are easy to take care of and do not need to go outside to use the bathroom. Nine stories would be quite a trip all the time.
