Music expresses so many things that aren't necessarily tangible by other means.

Western music tends to be rather fixed and rigid. It may not always sound so, but it's almost always 4/4 or 3/4. The rhythm is something that can be counted on like a clock. We have a 12 note scale that can't be diverged from. Whole steps and half steps and nothing inbetween.

Eastern music makes use of a much larget musical palette with more fluid rhythm and many more notes.

African music also has a very fluid rhythm.

Western music is adopting some rhythm from other cultures, but is still "western"

On top of the musicality the words in the music and the topics discussed tell wonderful stories about the cultures they come from. Understanding the stories help understand what's important to a culture.

Really basic, but thats a nutshell.

I would hate to think what genre of music other nations would choose to represent the US. Do you mean folk music? I think it would tend to generalize too much to be truly educational.
