The answers given are fairly complete and accurate. However, some students have trouble with fractions and understanding the concept.

If your nephew still has trouble understanding fractions... send me an email and I'll send some of my information which is too long to include here.

(During the holiday season, it may take a while to answer.)

1 5/12 + 1 1/4 -=1 5/12 + 1 3/12= 2 8/12 = 2 2/3

1 1/3 + 1 1/6= 1 2/6 + 1 1/6 = 2 3/6 = 2 1/2

4 1/2 + 2 2/5 = 4 5/10 + 2 4/10= 6 9/10

1/2 + 3 4/5 = 5/10 + 3 8/10 = 3 13/10 = 4 3/10

(1) = 1 5/12 + 1 1/4 = 12/12 + 5/12 + 4/4 + 1/4 =>
(1) = 17/12 + 5/4 = 17/12 + 15/12 = 32/12 = 8/3

(2) = 3/3 + 1/3 + 6/6 + 1/6 = 4/3 + 7/6 = 8/6 +7/6 = 15/6

Do the same to (3) and (4). To add or subtract fractions, you need to find the common denominator. In the case of (1) it was 12, and in the case of (2) it was 6

1. 1 5/12 + 1 1/4 = 1 5/12 + 1 3/12
= 2 8/12
= 2 2/3

2. 1 1/3 + 1 1/6 = 1 2/6 + 1 1/6
= 2 3/6
= 2 1/3

3. 4 1/2 + 2 2/5 = 4 5/10 + 2 4/10
= 6 9/10

4. 1/2 + 3 4/5 = 5/10 + 3 8/10
= 3 13/10
= 4 3/10

Convert to least common denominator then do the math.

For the first one the least common denominator is 12.

So 1 5/12 + 1 3/12 (= 1/4) = 2 8/12 or 2 3/4.

You sound smart enough to do the rest.

Good luck!

I'm not sure why people give others a hard time, after all, the topic is "Homework Help".

Add the whole numbers first, then you add the fractions.
You have to convert the fractions so they have the same denominator (ex 1: 5/12 + 1/4 is the same as 5/12 + 3/12 by multiplying both the numerator and denominator by 3)
now you just add the numerators: ans 2 8/12 which reduces to
2 2/3.
