What is the difference between the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo DS Lite?

Everyone is telling me to get the Lite and I haven't got a clear answer why.

the ds light is a smaller version and has a built in "lite"

the ds is bigger and heavier but the ds lite is light, easy to carry, and has bright light
