When it first started, the noise would stop if I hit the brakes even just lightly, but would start up as soon as I let off the brakes (I could be moving anywhere from 1-85mph). Now the squealing starts and doesn't stop unless I brake hard, and braking sometimes squeals like a bus or train would. I drive a manual 1993 saturn sl2. What is the reason for this problem?

PS: To my knowledge, there has been no recent work done on the brakes.

The front brake pads on your car have what is called a wear indicator. This is a small metal tab on the edge of the brake pad. This tab will touch the surface of the brake rotor when your pads wear thin, usually when there is only about 3/32 of an inch left on the friction material of the pad. This tab is the most likely source of the noise that you are hearing. Although there can be other causes, but this is most likely.

Car Squeaks Until I Brake

you are in need of brake work. the disc pads on your brakes are worn out ,and when this occurs there are several hard steel pins that pop out of the pads and make contact with the rotors.when this noise 1st appears audible it is time to replace the pads.if let go too long the noise is constant and the pins wear grooves in the rotors, and the rotors must be turned on a lathe or replaced which is most often the most viable solution. hope this helps. ken

get the brakes fixed befor you run into real problems with them.....new pads and have the rotors machined down a couple of thousands of an inch. this will give the new pad new surface to seat against and promote better pad life

Well it is time to have your brakes fixed, the squealing is metal on metal, your brake pads are worn away and now the metal pad backing is grinding away on your discs. You will have to replace the discs and get new pads. Dont get the discs cut, they will be too thin if you do that.

I had the same problem on my car, if the noise seems to get "faster" as you accelerate than it is definitely the calipers hanging up. You should definitely get it checked out soon, on my car I was lazy/didn't want to spend money on parts and time repairing it so I ignored it and it eventually wore down my pads and through my rotors and made me spend more money than I originally would have had to. If its not that though than its probably just the pads.

It sounds to me like you need new brake pads. And since it's been going on so long you may need new roters too. Get it in ASAP to keep things as cheap as possible. They may be able to just rotate your roters if they aren't too bad.

better check the calipers.sounds like you got 1 hanging up on you.while you got the wheels off, check the pads,to see if the squeeler is touching the rotors.
