At the beginning of Alzheimer's the patient is made aware of it. That gives the person some time to prepare and discuss things with their family. Alzheimer's can progress quite slowly given the right drugs and it can be many many years before the person gets to the point of needing to be reminded of his/her condition. At that stage it is up to the family whether or not to continue to tell them that they have Alzheimer's but then they probably would have to keep explaining what it was every few minutes too.

I have a client with Alzheimers and she occasionally asks for her sister (who has been dead for 30 years). I just tell her that I haven't met her and then we talk about something else. Sometimes she gets agitated about things but I am able to calm her down and get her mind on other things such as doing her "find a word" puzzles.

Depends on the stage. In the early stages, yes, however as the Alzheimer's progresses in severity, he or she will become less and less aware.

Can only say that this is one of the most heart wrenching diseases to watch a loved one go through. My step father died 10 years ago from it. Believe me it changes you forever.

Believe me. They know they have it. It is especially hard in the earlier stages when it kicks in and out with having good and bad days.
