In today's vehicles they have computers and they are set up from the factory so that at some point in time this light lights up. Once lit it can only be reset by a mechanic who has the computer set up. It is set up so it trips either on reaching a certain amount of miles or when it reaches a set time. Like when the vehicles reaches six months old. Or twelve months. It is all pre-set at the factory. I myself believe it just a way for the dealers to make more money as they as a rule will get paid for doing this.

you check engine light could have come on for a number of reasons. Make sure that when you close your gas cap it clicks 3 or more times, or you may just be due for service depending on the mileage and last time you had it serviced. if you had it serviced recently then you just probably need to get it reset.

Take to Auto-zone for a free computer code scan. If you don't have an Auto-zone call others and see if they are free to check or have a loaner program. The code will tell you where the problem may be coming from or which exact sensor is bad.

Is the vehicle 96 or newer they have OBDII monitors. Have the codes pulled. The codes could be anything from o2 sensor, evap leak, EGR, etc. If you just put gas in your car make sure the gas cap is on tight. That could possible be for a large evap leak. The codes are kept in the computer if it happens to turn off. Any local auto repair facility should be able to pull the codes.

It might be serous, or not. My Mom's came on a couple months ago, and we took it to a Midas to get it serviced. Make sure that your gas cap is on good. It takes 30 starts to make it go off if the gas cap was what the problem was.

You can buy a code reader at wallmart for $50, or goto your local auto atore and they can hook it up and tell you the code. 80% of the time it is a sensor, oxygen sensor, egr sensor..... stuff like that. But you need to fix it.

Autozone stores will read the code for free. Tighten the gas cap first.
