nope thats against the law, and you can change your major in the middle of the year if you want to and colleges expect that. scholarships on the otherhand are a little more particular.

There's nothing that says they can't. It's commonly believed that it does matter. There are enough true stories out there of kids who don't have the necessary stats for a particular campus but gets in b/c of the major he chooses. Or, they picked a popular major and didn't get in, even tho their scores were probably good enough had they chosen something less competitive (usually happens when applying for science, econ, or engineering).

Supposedly they don't -- but I put on my application that I intended to major in Classical Languages. I think it helped. They don't get many Classic majors. Either way, it can't hurt to choose an "in demand" major on your application. You're not bound by it anyway.
