I am planning on buying the XBOX 360 but am not planning on online gaming so do I need to buy the more expensive system or can I get away with just the core package? What is the hard drive for in the more expensive bundle package?

The hard drive isn't for online gaming. The hard drive is for saving games, demos, trailers, movies, bought arcade games, and downloading the latest patch so you can play some, but not all, XBX games. It's also used for storing extra game contents, like costumes, new levels, game items, etc.
Don't even consider whether or not you should go with the premium. Just do with it. It's the better deal even though it's 100 bucks more. By the time you upgrade the core to match the premium, you will have spent more than 100 bucks. So, save some money and pay that 100 buck extra.

get the hard drive you can put music pictures and a ton of game saves on it well worth the extra.

well you need to save games, so if you plan to play alot of games then youll want the hardrive, plus music and stuff if you want it, you may not yet or at all, but atleast you hav ethe option if you ever do
