I have a 12 year old daughter who feels like her throat is closing in on her. I don't think it is a food allergy because it happens all the time. It could be stress or anxiety or it could it be some gland due to hormones like thyroid?? Has anyone experienced this and know what it could be? I don't know if I should take her to a ENT or an allergist or a therapist? I am not totally sure if something is physically happening or if it is in her head. It feels so weird to her she won't be left alone, she wants me to sleep with her and she does not want to go to school because she is afraid it is going to close and she won't be able to breathe.

Dont delay seeing a doctor, throat closing can be very serious, such as anaphylaxia ,there are many things that can trigger an anaphylactic response, such as latex and insect bites, if she is having difficulty breathing call 911. She is experiancing anxiety due to the throat closing. Please see a doctor first to rule out if it medical, then if it doesnt resolve seek a therapist.goodluck

Something similar happened to me when I was around 9, and it actually prevented me from swallowing food. After the doc ruled out anything physical and said it was "all in my head," I found out years later that I was having a psychosematic reaction due to PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).

It could be a number of things; allergies to something, strep throat, etc...your best bet is to take her to a physician immediately, who can diagnose her or inform her that nothing is in fact wrong with her. If there is nothing wrong with her, than it could me mental, in that case, a therpist might be in order.
