Right now I have two sticks of 512 MB each. I bought a 1GB stick and basically my question is can I put the 2 512's on one side and the GB on the other?

Well, I have a Pentium, and you need to upgrade memory in pairs.

Ok, let me clarify:

There are 4 slots.
Slots 1 + 2 are together
and Slots 3 + 4 are together
When upgrading memory in a pentium processor you need to upgrade both sides equally.

I was asking if I could put 2 512 Mb sticks in slots 1+2, and a 1GB stick in slot 3. Equalling both sides at 1GB Each.
I wasn't sure if I needed either the same GB total in each, or identical gb amounts in each slot.

I went ahead and put the 512's in slots 1 and 2 and the 1gb in slot 3, and it worked fine, so thanks for trying, but I got it :).

I am not too sure what you mean by "sides", but if you have the right type of memory, you can put in as many sticks as you have available slots. A 32-bit computer will recognize upto 4 GB of main memory. The order of the sticks doesn't matter in most computers, but if you have an owner's manual, that might be a good thing to verify if your computer doesn't recognize how much memory you think you have installed.

Most Desktops come with either 2 or 4 slots...never just 3 unless this system is really old.
You will notice on one of the memory slots a small number 1, this is slot 1...the largest memory stick MUST go into this slot and then the other two memory sticks can go into the other slots accordingly...slots 2 and 3.

If it specifically states that memory MUST be installed in pairs, then you MUST install either 2-512MB or 2-!GB sticks together. The number one DIMM slot is the slot that is closest to the CPU. If they're color coded then install the pair into the same color slots ie if the number one slot is green and the one next to it is orange then install the 2 sticks into the 2 green slots. If you want to end up with 2GB, and you have 4 slots install 4 sticks of 512's.

If you have 3 slots or more you can use all 3. What order you put them in probably doesn't matter, as long as they are the same type of memory.

Based on my experience... you can put as many RAMs as you want as long as its compatible with each other and supported by your Bios... for example... you have a 2sticks of 512MBs DDR-PC333 RAM and your going to add up another 1stick of 1GB DDR-PC333... it will work... but if it's a different type of RAM it will not work.
