Your computer is all the hardware you need.
The emulator is purely software based. The program you want to run is the only variable.
However...not all emulators are created equal. Log onto tech and gaming sites and start asking questions. A friend has several different emulators, and can't run all of his programs (even though they are the same platform) with all of the emulators.

http://dohgames.com is the best for emu and roms. You could run them on BASIC BASIC computers so no hardware needed to upgrade unless ur running something OLD OLD OLD
