Well, it can be meant either way. A compliment would be implying that you had something to believe in, were intelligent (hippies were very literate, despite the weed.....if you read some biographies of what went on during those times, that is when allot of philosophical thinking starting to re-appear), and have good taste in music (i.e. the Rolling Stones, Jimi, Janis, and Jim...Led Zeppelin, The Who and so forth).
It can be meant as an insult when used in a stereotypical way...meaning that hippies were just a bunch of drugged up horny people who didn't take showers/baths.

It would depend who called me a hippie. From another hippie i'd take it as a compliment. From my boss, not so much so.

I dont consider it either, I just get pissed when people use it out of context! I worked in a grocery store and this one customer would always tell me "bye hippie!" One day I asked him why he always says that and he said because I looked like I was trying to save the world. Really? I almost thought he was going to say something about my greasy hair! Buts thats not all they stood for. What about how they rebelled against institutions, criticized middle class values, promoted sexual liberation and were anti-war? I do none of that...ok maybe the sexual liberation part!jk! I just wish people who you use the word would know what they were talking about!

Compliment. My friends called me the emo hippie. I was a bit of a cross between Karen/Winnie from the Wonder Years and Darlene from Roseanne/Daria/Wednesday Addams. Interesting mix, let me tell ya. :)

It depends on the tone.
"Oh my gosh! You are so righteous man for giving me this tofu! Peace, my hippie!"--Compliment
"You smell like crap and you need to wash your hair! Stop being a dirty hippie!"--Insult
