Are you asking if a laptop could actually cause you damage if you left it on your lap too long?

Well, having your computer on any cloth surface will make it heat up, as you are more than likely blocking vents. However, the chances of the laptop getting to the point of burning you is very unlikely. I'm not saying that it couldn't get that hot, but safety measures are in most good computers that will shut down the computer automatically if it overheats, so it will shut off before it can ever actually burn you.

It all depends on the make and model of the laptop. Some do get hotter than others. Most laptop manufacturers test the heat sink and/or fan capabilities for high temperatures. Most system boards are equipped with a heat sensor and will automatically either shut down automatically with a small dialog box indicated the temperature is too high or the Fan has malfunctioned and causing the CPU to over heat. NOTHING on the system gets hot except the CPU. You will notice that one side of the laptop is hotter then the other; (of course this is where the CPU is located directly). No laptop should burn you and if it does then either the CPU fan or the temperature sensor has malfunctioned...if neither are the case then you should notify the manufacturer that the system is getting way to hot and uncomfortable on your lap...also, as a side note: you may just have sensitive skin.

Short Answer:Yes.

The laptop will get much warmer (about 100-115 Deg F) than your normal body temperature and prolonged exposure on one part of your body (any part, not just your legs) it can cause minor first degree burns....similar to a scalding burn from hot water

If you must use the laptop for an extended period of time, place an insulator between you and it....a newspaper, or anything.

My legs have turned a little red before. The worst I have seen would be a MacBook Pro. The aluminum case made for some nasty heat rashes.

There was a news article some time back (can't remember where) that the heat from laptops could perhaps affect a male's fertility!
