There are a FEW and I repeat FEW freshwater fish that will survive in saltwater and yes, in many cases you can have them live peacefully together.

Figure 8 or green spotted puffers will tolerate freshwater for short amounts of time but like saltwater just fine.

Mollies, when acclimated to 1.025 ppm salinity over the course of a few months will do fine and are great hair algae eaters!

Guppies will also convert over as well as monos, skates and a few others that I'm sure I can't think of right now.

Goldfish do not.

However, there are a lot of saltwater fish that would react negatively and aggresively toward certain freshwater fish so be careful when choosing tankmates. Research your animals fully before purchasing and remember to cycle your tank fully before adding fish!!

If you are serious you probably want to start researching what all is involved with saltwater tanks. I suggest www.reefcentral.com

Good Luck!!

Actually there are a couple of freshwater fish that will live in saltwater including mollies.

This assumes that they are acclimated slowly to the saltwater and not just dropped into a tank.

Otherwise you cannot mix and match fresh and salt water fish.

A Black Molly will live in a Salt Water Aquarium. I think they actually Brackish Water fish. But, I know they do better in Salt Water than they will in Fresh Water.
Guess I should add. You need to float them and slowly add the tank water for it to adjust. I never just throw one in Salt Water from Fresh Water and expect it to live, though it may.

There are some fish which could stay in freshwater that desire saltwater. There additionally are some fish reported as Brackish fish. this suggests in the wild they stay the place the sea(salt) meets the river(sparkling). whether, as a usual rule, clearly sparkling water fish do no longer do nicely in saltwater. yet there are exceptions.

no. If u put freshwater fish in salt water, your fish will shrivel because they can't take the saltiness, and will lose their body fluids rapidly. Saltwater fish in fresh water, they will increase in size (aka bloating) and will eventually die.

There are some "freshwater fish" that can tolerate high amounts of salt in their water and become brackish or marine, such as mollies and guppies. ( I raise guppies in brackish water and they flourish) The ones that CAN tolerate high levels of salt HAVE to be converted gradually...if you don't they will suffer from osmotic shock and die!
Please read up on aquarium keeping, types of fish etc. before considering buying any. :-)
