You get pregnant within 24 hours of ovulation. So it's either the day you ovulate or the day afterwards. The egg is not good anymore after that. Sex up to 5 days before ovulation can result in a pregnancy since sperm can live for 5 days.

On the day you ovulate, if there are sperm present then they will likely fertilize the egg. This happens in the fallopian tube, then the fertilized egg will travel down the tube to the uterus, where it will hopefully attach to the uterine wall. When it does this, a hormone called HCG will be released. This is the hormone that is picked up by a pregnancy test. Some pregnancy tests will pick up very low levels of the hormone and you can get a positive result around four days before your period is due (about 10 days after you ovulated). Most tests will give you a positive by the day your period is due (about 2 weeks after ovulation). So you will have to wait a little while after "the act" before you know if you're pregnant. It's the longest wait ever :) Good luck if you are trying to conceive!!

I know when I'm ovulating by my discharge. I had sex that day and I'm now happily pregnant. Here's a link to figure out if you're ovulating.
