A marriage that is validly performed in another country will be recognized as a legal marriage in the US. The trick is to making sure you follow all the rules and regulations in the country in which you are getting married. You need to have a valid marriage license from that country and have it performed by someone who is allowed to do so. As long as your marriage would be recognized as valid and legal in the country in which it was performed - the US will recognize it as valid and legal as well. (Not sure this applies to same-sex marriage - probably the "defense of marriage act" applies in that situation.)
If you are going to be facing immigration officials and just want to be 100% sure of not having a problem you can always get married in the US as well as abroad. I was married in India and the US (to the same person!) We felt that would ensure that no questions could be raised about whether or not the Indian one was valid.

Marriages outside the US are legal. But that doesn't allow automatic entry of the person born outside the US. The US citizen must apply for entry and a green card with the spouse, which usually involves making sure the marriage is authentic and making sure there is sufficient income to support both parties.
