Traditionally, the Governor General of Canada is the person WHO represents the Sovereign, the Queen of Canada, within Canada. OF COURSE, when the Sovereign is in Canada, the Governor General only accompanies the Sovereign. When here, Her Majesty opens Parliament, etc.

More recently it seems the Governor General is travelling around the world representing Canada.
