Two guys have it right. Darpa created Arpanet which later was called the internet. The internet was used for messaging between computers and users at gov/military/universities. The World Wide Web is not the same as the internet but uses the internet to send text and images using HTML and newer "mark up" languages for text, images and so on.

Ethernet is a local network method between local computers.
