in 'The Howling', the wolf only would change when there was a full moon. in real life, if they did exist, it would maybe like this. they could change without the moon, but it's better if they change during a full moon.

The classic interpretation of a werewolf needs the moon; it's change is dictated by the moon and uncontrollable. However, there are countless different werewolf varieties from books, movies, and games that have different circumstances (such as those from the movie Underworld). Further, there are different folklore stories that say different things. Really depends on what type of werewolf you imagine.

A full moon causes the change everytime, but in some circumstances magical stones or other trinkets could 'control' the virus, at least a little. The very piont of the werewlf virus is that it is violent, it controls its victim. In my opinion, a werewolf who gets older may gain the experience to change at will, or control the change within the full moon period, but really, the core of the ledgend is that the virus is volatile, and beyond control.

1) werewolves are real, but they are not at all the way they are represented in most movies or tv shows;
2) the person's human body does not transform into a wolf body, the person's spirit and the wolf's spirit make an agreement to Astral Project and temporarily exchange bodies;
3) Astral Projection is far easier during nights of the full moon, but is quite possible at any time;
4) metal that is electrically conductive tends to disrupt temporary Astral connections, so 'copper bullets' or even 'gold bullets' would be as effective in immediately ending the experience as would 'silver bullets';
Werewolves only hunt humans, as wolves only hunt humans, when they are insane. Unfortunately, humans Astral Projecting into wolves' bodies have had negative experiences at the hands of other humans, have remembered these when they returned to their own bodies, and have behaved vengefully.

In Underworld, werewolves, or lykans in this case, could transform by sheer will. Not only that, but they kept their human conciousness, they didn't turn into rampaging beasts just out for the kill.
