Ask some knowledgeable horse owners and trainers in your area. They would probably be able to guess for you. If you want to take a guess by yourself, look thorough some breed books as others have suggested. Unless you have papers, it will be almost impossible to know whether you have a purebred or not. You will never be absolutely sure if the bloodlines are pure or if they were ever crossed with another breed. If your not breeding or showing, the breed doesn't matter anyways, all horses are special whether they are purebred or not. Also, if you post a pic of your horse, you could see what the majority of us online think. Good luck.

Unfortunately with a horse the only guarantee of what breed you have is knowing it's purebred heritage, or having it's pedigree in front of you.

There are so many horses of mixed breeds or even purebreds that can resemble other breeds and there is really no way that is 100% positive to tell breed unless you have the papers or know the lineage.

If you don't have registration papers for it I would start by looking through a breed book to see what he/she most resembles. Most breeds have a trait or two that will help distinguish them. Even if you can't narrow it down to a specific breed, you can often get down to a "type", for example, warmblood, stock horse, draft, etc and go from there. If you absolutely have no guesses, ask your vet. They have to go through basic breed training in school, and most of them gain a pretty good eye through their practice.

You can look at breed books. Since the different breeds have different characteristics, that should help you narrow it down a little. Good luck!

go on your community tack save, and notice what they have there. additionally, Barnes and Noble, and regularly occurring e book shops would desire to sell a e book called the horse and Pony Encyclopædia. this would be a great e book for that.

Email me a pic and I will give you my best guess.
Otherwise you can look at breed books (you can find them at your library) and pick out which ones it looks close to.
