I was watching Vh1 the other day and I saw this thing all about Canada. In it the people said that censoring nudity and curse words wasn't like it is in the United States. Is that true? Does the government not blur out nudity and beep out curse words up there? If so do you have a website that will back this up? I'm writing a paper on it and can't find anything on Canadian censorship.

The vast majority of TV watched by Canadians is American. The CBC is not considered very interesting (unless you like watching every hockey game, old movies, and political talk shows). There isn't really any nudity or curse words on regular TV, but there is the odd exception, one being 'Trailer Park Boys'. Movie channels are really the only ones that show nudity, and they are always American. Same goes for curse words. The movie channels are uncensored. It is up to the customer to censor this material: If you don't want the kids in the house to be able to access R movies, then put a ceiling on the ratings. For instance, if you don't want your kids to watch anything over PG13, then set the ceiling at PG13, and all ratings higher than that will be blocked out. Don't let your kids know what the password is in order the change the ceiling.

In Canada, and in most of the world, nudity is not nearly as offensive as violence. Almost all American shows involve handguns in some form or other, and action shows are guaranteed to have guns. Seeing someone's bum on TV is not even in the same category as seeing someone's head blown off.

America is the only Western nation that censors the content shown on television, although most have a time before which adlut themes are not shown.

Other countries can show full frontal nudity and air the 'seven words' that are not allowed on US television. We have one of the most restrictive set of laws governing television broadcasts in the western hemisphere. No free speech in America anymore!

It is nothing to see boobies on the CBC at 2 in the afternoon. Canadian television is still censored, just not as heavily as it's American counterpart. You will not see excessive racial slurring, hate speech, or Hard Core pornography.

However use of curse words is a non issue after 9 at night, you can also catch soft core porn from time to time after 11. I challenge you to find a Canadian teenager who doesn't know about showcase after dark.

The Canadians don't block out as many words, and do allow more nudity. It's not the Erotic channel, more like the "rated R" channel after hours.

HOWEVER...

They censor a lot more than the USA. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is determined to keep "American culture" out of Canada. So, you'll see much of the same programming in Canada, but it is dispersed over different outlets. For instance, you can't get ESPN in Canada, and NASCAR is hit and miss due to government regulations. BTW, Fox is "Austrialian" according to the Canucks (wink, nod).

They may be a tad liberal but not that liberal. They banned Howard Stern ages ago from the Canadian station that carried him back when he was on broadcast.

They might show light R movies uncut late at night, but that's about it.

Some US TV stations do that. AT 3 AM on a week day they'll let you have a fast peek.

It is my understanding that Canada does censor political content. I don't know what their position on decadence is.
