The company officially changed the name of its service from AuctionWeb to eBay in September 1997.

Originally, the site belonged to Echo Bay Technology Group, Omidyar's consulting firm. Omidyar had tried to register the domain name EchoBay.com but found it already taken by the Echo Bay Mines, a gold mining company, so he shortened it to his second choice, eBay.com.

Electronic Bay (like a safe harbor for trading things electronically)

it was originally going to be called echobay.com but that name was already taken by Echo Bay Mines, so Omidyar's second choice was eBay.com

I think ebuy.com was already taken at the time, so they registered ebay instead

no. Ebay is like E-mail.

Ebay is an "electronic bay" or port for items to come in and be sold.

Just like E-mail is "electronic mail"

Ebay is a virtual "bay"
