I think it is more important to simply be aware that everyone is different. It doesn't matter if you understand different cultures or not, I personally don't think that it is imporant.
You don't need to understand people's cultures to respect them as individuals.

I hate all these politically correct (idiot) terminology such as "cultural diversity." If our liberal, leftwing, and anti-God public schools did a better job teaching instead of flouting leftwing political agendas such as teaching homosexuality to kids, then maybe kids and adults would be taught about the various nations, races, peoples, cuisines, and yes, cultures that exist around the world. Being aware, as you say it, begins with proper schooling, and our public schools are obviously leaving a void for leftwing movements to sneak in thier PC crap such as their version of "cultural diversity."

You get to get over yourself. I think one thing that is not recognized is that humility is strength. To accept the value of other cultures and people who don't look or live like you or even think quite like you requires humility and strength of character. Pity many of our leaders world-wide (including the Bush) don't realize that the greatest leaders have had humility and a sense of humanity that transcends race or religious differences.
