The reason why your doctor gave you a dilator is that your urethra is narrow (stricture). The dilator helps to keep it patent. Clean, intermittent use of the dilator is entirely safe and is, in fact, a standard practice in urology. Just be careful when you insert it so it wont traumatize your urethra. All you need to do is wash it w/ soap and water before use. And wash your hand before you handle it. You may use that dilator as long as it has not accumulated dirt. Since its cheap, you may replace it after 2-3 wks of use. By the way, use a lubricant like KY Jelly. It makes the insertion easier and less painful. Good luck!
