I rent a house and the smoke detector goes off when we open the bathroom door and let out the steam after a shower. Right now we've just taken the smoke detector out because it wakes everyone up in the morning. We talked to the property management company about this and they keep replacing the detectors with presumably the same crappy ones. What should we do?

This still happens when the door is open only slightly and when the fan is on and it won't disapate for about an hour. Last year, we kept the door closed all the time, and we ended up with mold

Smoke detectors don't really detect smoke; rather they detect small particles in the air. Usually, there is a a small radioactive sample and a detector. Particles in the air obstruct the decaying matter, causing fewer to reach the detector. When the number of such particles drop below a threshold, the detector sounds.

The particles can be smoke, but also condensing moisture from a shower. Likely, all detectors will do this, depending more on the location of the detector in relation to the shower.

You can prevent it from going off by turning on the vent in the bathroom (if you have one) or only leaving the bathroom door open a crack after stepping out. The steam will escape slowly, and will be less likely to trip the alarm.

I have the same problem, but its because i have a smoke/heat detector. If the air in the bathroom is too warm after the shower it will trigger the alarm. After I shower, I open and close the door a few times to let the warm air out of the bathroom in short bursts so the alarm doesn't go off anymore. A good way to resolve would be to turn on the fan in the bathroom if you have one. Unfortunatley I live in an older home and don't have one.

The steam causes the smoke detector to go off there are a couple of ways to handle this problem. You can open a window to allow the steam to escape or install an exhaust fan and leave it on while you shower

Try moving the smoke detector a little farther away from the bathroom door.
