On the basis of your statement alone, your teacher was very unwise. However, based on 29 years of teaching, there was something that led up to the name calling and I would be interested in knowing what that was. Teachers rarely walk into class and call a student an idiot without being provoked in some way. You also need to reflect on the conversation and be sure the teacher did not say you were "acting" like an idiot rather than an actual idiot. Those are two very different statements. I know that I have never called a hard working, academically minded, polite, cooperative, responsible student any sort of negative name at all, even in jest. Perhaps you should examine both sides of the issue before you start looking for an attorney to represent you.

It all depends on what the teacher actually said. If the teacher actually called you something like "stupid," "idiot," "dummy," etc., then YES that teacher can get into real trouble or fired.
Speaking as a college professor, our job is to educate our students, not personally insult them! And calling somebody stupid is a major no-no, which will definitely result in disciplinary action. And I don't blame any student for speaking up and voicing a complaint when this happens, because nobody deserves it.
And I've had students in my class who have told me stories about how other teachers have personally called them names or insulted them right in front of their classmates. My advice to those students was to complain to the appropriate people, otherwise this behavior will continue.
And I realize that some student are afraid to complain about this, which is why those teachers continue doing it. But when somebody has the courage to stand up and say this won't be tolerated, that's when that behavior will stop.

No, your teacher can't get in trouble for calling you an idiot. There are worse things in life than being called an idiot.

Probably not anymore than you would if you called your teacher an idiot. The principal will tell the teacher not to do it again, same thing you would be told.
Tenured teachers are not to be messed with. Little would happen if the offense were worse. Beside, everyone knows that 115 ornery kids are tough to deal with and probably need to be disciplined much harsher.

It acually depends on the grade.. type of school and who heard it... Has your teacher called other people in the class an idiot?
sadly public schools dont do much to protect their students.. but depending on who you tell.. thats how you get them in troubble.. If you write a letter to the head of your School district that will have soe effect... start with another teacher you trust.. dont use any names tho.. cause most teachers are friends!

Of course!
The context of the statement is not needed.
Name calling is never the correct response to any behavior--it only escalates the conflict, it doesn't resolve it.
Humiliation is never allowed.
It affects the self-esteem and your attitudes to your education in that subject.
If your parents are able, call the school and let the principal know.
There should at least be an apology from the offending teacher.

Probably not, since it could be your word against theirs. However, realize any teacher that would say that in an educational setting is either an idiot themselves or you need to keep your mouth shut in class and learn something.

I don't think so. You could say she's acting on verbal harassment, but that's a streeetch you shouldn't be willing to take. Few teachers say stupid things sometimes and can't keep their mouths shut. I know one of my teachers just CAN'T stop talking about other people. She'll talk about you right in front of your face - it's what she calls 'being honest.' Plus, she's a major flirt.
Is it any of our fault those teachers end up getting fired anyway?
