To remove Saddam and his friends from power and to search for the weapons of mass destruction. These 2 missions have been accomplished. They also wanted to create a democratic republic in Iraq, but Saddam was the only guy who could keep that country under control. To achieve the 3rd goal we are depending on Iraqis to create a good government, which is something they may never do , no matter how much help we give them. At present the main goal of the Americans in Iraq, is to avoid getting killed.

At least as stated publicly (as I tend to agree with above that the real reason was oil), the goals were to eliminate Iraq's non-existent WMD, sever the gov't's non-existent ties to al-Qaeda, and impose a stable, utopian, free-market-oriented democracy on Iraq that would inspire people all across the Middle East to overthrow their autocrats in favor of democracy too. I suppose this last could still happen, but I wouldn't count on it.

well george bush said because he blindly thought there were weapons of mass destruction and to get sadom out of power. But now are helping solve the civil war in Iraq between the sunni and shiat parties. those two have been battling since Muhamed died like 3000 years ago "who will be next leader"

Not going into war is just waiting to be attacked.
So we went there because our feelings from 9/11 brought us to the conclusion that we must fight.
